Summer at Shale Creek 4

It’s July, and it’s officially summer! While it may be easy to dream of adventure on a championship-caliber golf course complete with a full service bar, restaurant and a patio second to none, it is difficult to find one locally. When it comes to group outings, it is even harder to find such a course that is also open to the public.

That is, unless you’ve visited Shale Creek Golf Club. Located just outside of the City of Medina, this stunning golf course celebrates the natural beauty of Northeast Ohio in a way that golfers of all skill levels can enjoy and appreciate.

“Shale is a links style course,” explains Scott Schreck, Director of Golf. “Links is a style common in Scotland or Ireland, and traditionally you’d find it on a seaside. They usually have fewer trees, and more rolling terrain with larger greens. While traditional American-style golf courses tend to be more tree-lined, Shale more open and rolling terrain which lends itself to be enjoyed by golfers of varying skill levels.”

At each hole, one can find five sets of tees to accommodate most all golfers. As you journey across the bent grass fairways, tees and greens of this championship course, be sure to admire the Rocky River and other creeks that cut through and shape the layout. All 18 holes fit naturally into the rich, undulating Medina County Landscape, offering endless views that will continually lift your spirits and fuel your sense of adventure.

Shale also adds tremendous value to each golfer’s experience.  Unlike most any other course in Ohio or the Midwest, the golf carts are equipped with GPS units to provide players with each hole’s layout and yardage, each player receives a complimentary bottle of water at the start of their round, and use of the range/practice facility is included in the guest fee.  All these additional features and golf course conditions that match up with any private course makes Shale a must play.

“The views of the sunset are amazing,” says Debi McNab, Food and Beverage Manager. “I take pictures from the clubhouse all the time and when I show them to people I say, ‘Look at my office.’ The sunsets just to the west, and the view from the 18th hole is particularly striking. It’s stunning— the colors are so vibrant. People will come in for dinner and live entertainment, and then they stick around to watch the sunset melt into the horizon.”

The Shale Creek Clubhouse, which opened in 2013, is a beloved secret local golfers share. It houses the Granite Grille, which one can enjoy regardless of if they are coming off of the green or if they are finishing up errands in town. The Granite Grille features indoor and outdoor seating, both of which offer fantastic views of the coveted Ohio sunsets.

“The clubhouse is the perfect place to host a golf outing,” says Schreck. “Groups can enjoy our unique course and then have a beautiful banquet room to host their guests for a mouth-watering meal afterwards. Whether you are planning a large event for a charity with door prizes and raffles or a small and intimate business event, our clubhouse is perfect for all occasions. Also, if your group enjoys outdoor dining, the patio seats over 100, so you can kick back and watch your fellow golfers as they finish up at the 18th hole.”

“Chef Jen Drumm creates daily specials, and she makes soup from scratch every day,” adds McNab. “You never know what she’ll come up with, it’s always delcious. At Granite Grille, one can expect options including fresh pasta, fish, seasonal salad, desserts from scratch, and all the goodies golfers love—wings, steak, burgers, and healthier choices including guacamole and sandwiches. And, she is always willing to say yes. If there is a special gluten need or allergy, she is more than happy to accommodate.”

It is worth noting that the décor of the clubhouse is rich browns and creamy whites, a palette complimentary to any color scheme that you can dream. As a golf course, restaurant, and a banquet facility, Shale Creek Golf Club will make the perfect backdrop to any summer day trip.
