Popping the big question can be a nerve-wracking experience, and Timber Lodge Owner Ron Levitt has seen many a proposal first-hand in his historic Medina restaurant.

“They want it to be perfect,” he says. “And we’ve seen it all. We’ve put a ring in the champagne and in the cake frosting. Many proposals have taken place here over the years, and I think there is a reason for that.”

Next to a menu featuring a wide selection of USDA choice, Prime and Angus steaks , fresh seafood, chicken, and pasta dishes, Timber Lodge has one other particularly alluring trait: it is filled with a charming sense of cozy familiarity thanks to its long history as a site of congregation.

The iconic Timber Lodge building is located on the “bend” of Pearl Road between Brunswick and Medina. In 1844, Samuel Clark constructed the first structure on the property—a simple farmhouse. Sometime in the decades following its construction, it passed through several other notable families (including the Kenyon, Richard, and Schaber families) and was rebuilt and used as an early area schoolhouse. By the 1930’s, the house fell into the possession of the Kellers, who added to the farmhouse and opened it as a restaurant in 1933.

“I purchased the restaurant in 2002, and the building underwent tremendous restoration,” he said, gesturing to the wood. “This is Wormy Chestnut wood. In the Depression Era, chestnut trees were infected with worms that carved holes in them. People were employed to cut down trees from coast to coast in an effort to spark the economy. As a result, a lot of old buildings have this beautiful, irreplaceable, warm wood. Here, it adds to the warm lodge environment.”

To further attest to the history of the building, Levitt has various memento photographs on display amongst the cozy chalet scenery. One such photo depicts a happy couple posing beside a cake with the number 50 proudly on display at its peak.

“Here is a great story—this couple was married here 50 years ago,” he explains, his eyes sparkling. “We booked out a private anniversary party for them, and family from coast to coast gathered here to celebrate with them. Many other guests have come in and informed me that they came in and had dinner after their high school prom, and now they’re in walkers. The restaurant has a long history of celebrating love.”

Of course, Timber Lodge continues the tradition of setting the scene for romantic memories through on and off site catering, both in full tableside and buffet style service.

“We’re famous for our desserts,” says Levitt. “The carrot cake is irresistible.”

Notable dishes feature Snapper, Walleye, Halibut, 1 lb Giant Lobster, Mahi Mahi, and other fish flown in from all over the world. Healthy, pan-seared, fresh, and never frozen, the variety of fresh seafood, handcut aged steak, and outstanding portions will blow your mind. The best part is that this is just a snapshot of the wide variety of regular menu items and chef features that are offered every day at Timber Lodge.

“We also have excellent selection of wine,” boasts Manager Lynsey Curren. “There is so much to choose from in the wine industry, but we strive to find a unique and delicious bottle at a great price. When you come to Timber Lodge, you have the opportunity to try wines that you won’t see on the endcap at the grocery store. It started with Boneshaker, a red wine made by Hahn Family Wines. After that, I fell in love with discovering the next big thing. Our latest hot seller is Intrinsic Cabernet Sauvignon, in which the grape skins remain with the fruit for nine months versus the usual one month that is standard for red wines.”

The restaurant’s full-service Jacalope Lounge features offers Happy Hour from 4 pm to 7 pm, Monday through Friday. This includes over 30 wines hand-selected by Curren and over 40 varieties of bottled beer.

“Timber Lodge is all about fresh steaks and seafood, big portions at a great value,” says Levitt. “We are a restaurant that is very rooted in the community, and we love being a part of it.

“We have our Prep Staff in at 7 am daily to prepare our Homemade Recipes of sauces and dressings, etc, cut our steaks, portion cut our fresh seafood loins, to be ready to open at 4 pm. That alone separates us from the chain restaurants. You will not find a Chef in those places.”
