The ultimate guy’s getaway a conversation with jeff daso of daso custom cabinetry
Why are man caves so popular right now?
Men have always had their go-to getaway spot, usually the garage. But trending these days, more homeowners are choosing to make their basements become the “man cave,” whether that be a bar, a game room or theater type environment. Men entertaining their friends has become a bigger part of our culture as well, or they just use the man cave as a simple getaway from the hustle & bustle of everyday life.
What type of man caves have you created?
Because we are a custom cabinetry company, many of our projects include some sort of bar or kitchen area, perhaps some built-ins for some of their favorite memorabilia. We like to create an inviting, yet fun and interesting atmosphere that fits the needs of that particular guy. One of our most recent favorites was a rustic basement bar, using knotty alder for the cabinetry, a ledger stone wall with a large screen tv nestled in between the cabinets, creating a cool, fun hang out spot.
Is it always in the basement or have you converted a den or garage?
Not always. Mostly, for entertainment purposes the basement is the go-to, but we have created some pretty cool man caves in working garages for that guy who likes to work on cars or build projects. It becomes a more useful space once we create the cabinetry for it. We’ve also converted some dens into gaming areas for the video gamers out there.
What’s trending in man caves?
Man caves are very specific to the client. We mostly see requests for cool bars; something their friends will talk about and enjoy being around for the big game.
What other interesting projects have you done?
We feel that each job is different, and therefore brings on a different interest level each time. One of our most interesting projects was designing and creating Chef Michael Symon’s kitchen a couple of years ago. We were very excited to be a part of that project.
