Get your motor running

I was raised as a tomboy – my dad had two girls but we were the boys he didn’t have. Living on a mini farm, back a long lane in the country, the days before internet and  cell phones, we spent our days outdoors.  We grew up on dirt bikes and tractors, doing crazy things, hearing my mom telling my dad he was going to “get us girls killed!”

My first bike was a boys bike in John Deere Green and my Barbies were played with in the sandbox with my John Deere Tractor Toy collection and Hot Wheels.

I have a love of speed and competition. As an adult my favorite bucket list accomplishment was having my own Harley Softail and the memories made riding alongside my daddy. I was able to beat him once!

I was beyond psyched to go to High Voltage Indoor Karting.

Who better to invite to race with me than my health insurance agent Patrick Althof. I had to make sure my premiums were up to date!

You race in eight minute segments. It is the most intense and white knuckling eight minutes! I recommend going during the week when it isn’t as busy so that you can really put the peddle to the metal to get the full effect. You race against the clock instead of each other and it was a definite adrenaline rush. I can see why they have you take a break between races.  If you’re looking for a family, corporate or party activity — all I can say is, you have to try High Voltage!

High Voltage Indoor Karting is at 333 Foundry Street, Medina  330.333.9000 HighVoltageKarting.com.

Head out on the highway

I headed to State 8 Motorcycle, where they carry ATV’s, cruisers, street bikes, scooters, side by sides.

I wanted to test something new, so Ernie Velasco showed me the Polaris Slingshot,  a 3-wheeled vehicle, somewhat like a motorcycle, that handles more like a car. It’s a side by side that is very low to the ground, has bucket seats and doesn’t lean.

I love shifting through the 5 speed manual transmission and how quickly it accelerates (not quick for a motorcycle, but quick for a car.) I could easily start off in second gear with no lag in the engine. It has an open comfortable cockpit and comes with many different windshields to choose from to keep the bugs out of your teeth, but the wind still in your hair!

It felt really stable and cornered well with the one back tire, although it does take some adjustment in steering on the straight away. I quickly adjusted to the feel of it. I like that I could drive hills and curves and still carry on a conversation with Ernie with no shouting.

It’s an experience unlike a car or a motorcycle. If you love driving and are an adventurer then you can’t go wrong with the Polaris Slingshot. But if you’re married, be careful — you may be fighting about who will do the driving! Come on, let’s face it – we’re all born to be wild!
